CBD for Skin 101

An Introduction to the Benefits and Bounty of What CBD can do for Your Skin

Many of us are often familiar with the terms “marijuana,” “THC,” “cannabis.” We have our own notions and impressions of these words, and what they might mean. Some are negative, and some positive… But as it’s 2019, and the legalization of marijuana is present and underway on an almost global spectrum, it's time to better understand what this mysterious herb does, and how it does it. The more we learn, the more we are understanding that it’s more beneficial than we had ever known.

We find ourselves at the brink of medicinal technology since its legalization has become more widespread. Well, ancient medicinal technology, that is, as the marijuana plant is presumably as old as time. And as many people are finding solace and safety in the inhalation and ingestion of marijuana based products, there is an even more specialized gain to be had that goes above the inner workings of the body. Literally!

First it's important to explain a bit of chemistry and how marijuana and it's many constituents affect the body. Marijuana has hundreds of different components that have various actions and outcomes physiologically. There are a few main constituents, however, that are the most effective and produce the more heightened effects. The two most relevant (and popular) are: 1) THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which has a more psychoactive effect, and, 2) CBD (cannabidiol), which does not have any psychoactive properties, but works more therapeutically.

When taken internally, CBD attaches itself to receptors in the brain and throughout the body (that we are born with biologically), to create effects that calm and relax the body. CBD acts on the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system to help relieve anxiety, nervousness, depression, and to aide in sleep. All of this happens without making a person “high,” which is actually the result of THC.

But what about CBD as it relates to the skin? Why are we all of a sudden seeing products with CBD popping up all over the pharmacy shelves? Why have we chosen this important and relevant extract to implement into our skin and body care routine?

Not only does CBD act as a relaxant in the body, but it also works as a powerful anti-oxidant on the skin. Studies have shown it can actually be more effective than Vitamin C and E when promoting cell turnover, and helping to slough off dead skin cells. The higher cell turnover can aide dramatically when it comes to under eye circles, protecting the skin against free radicals, and preventing the furthering of wrinkles.

CBD also acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory, helping to combat issues such as psoriasis, eczema, and other forms of dermatitis. These powerful properties are also effective in relieving some deeper issues of the skin.

Another fabulous result of CBD’s revolutionary anti-inflammatory properties is its defense against acne. Oftentimes acne is caused by the combination of internal and external influences, which can include hormonal imbalances, incorrect diet, bacteria on the skin, genetics, or some type of reaction to internal or external stimulus. Because of the reduction of inflammation and relaxant properties of CBD, it works to decrease the amount of sebum production, as well as the reactionary properties the skin can have to things like allergens or hormones, which allows for healing and less angered skin.

As we apply products to the skin, they are often absorbed into the deeper levels of the dermis, where there are millions of tiny blood vessels carrying product into the deeper organs. When used topically, especially when the skin is warmed from steam or a hot shower, CBD can penetrate into the muscles, where it can act as an anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory, allowing the muscles and nerves to soften.

We are checking off all the boxes; acne-prone skin, aging skin types, sensitive skin types. Is there any skin types CBD doesn’t work like magic to transform and preserve? It’s like living at the beach, what’s not to like?
